Cessnock Civic Precinct Revitalisation

Cessnock City Council is thrilled to announce we are taking the first steps in working towards our vision for a new and improved CBD.

Council has been working hard to advance the Cessnock experience for everyone. The Cessnock Civic Precinct Revitalisation Program comprises a number of sub-projects which will deliver staged implementation of the Cessnock CBD Master Plan and subsequent Cessnock Commercial Precinct Project.

This project proposes to enhance Cessnock CBD as an attractive place to visit with features that appeal to visitors and locals alike. These include thriving retail opportunities, easy access to car parking and well connected, visually appealing public spaces. The new CBD will feature interpretive signage, cycling opportunities and pedestrian friendly accesses. 

Planned works to the Cessnock CBD will inevitably cause disruptions to both pedestrians and local businesses. Residents can expect works to begin this month with the installation of the Cumberland Street pedestrian refuge expected to take two weeks. Works will then commence on North Avenue and Keene Street to improve pedestrian access. Crews will undertake night works to complete this project over the coming weeks. 

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent thanked residents for their patience during the project.

“The short term pain of disruption from construction will be outweighed by the long term benefit of a revitalised, safer and more connected CBD that will be an attractive place to visit with features that appeal to visitors and locals.”

Council’s Acting Economic Development Manager, Rhiannon Stevens said the works are in line with the community vision of creating vibrant and robust towns.

“This project will not only enhances economic viability and sustainability post mining, it supports attraction of new investment, enhances population growth and capacity, and supports economic resilience through enabling diversification into new sectors.”
