Council remains steadfast on access road to the Cessnock Correctional Centre

Cessnock City Council remain firm in their view that the access to the Cessnock Correctional Centre be taken off the local road network

At the most recent Council meeting the position of Council was again made clear, the Lindsay Street and Mavis Street access is not viable and should be closed. 

Councillors backed the decision from the most recent Cessnock Correctional Centre Community Consultative Committee meeting. Community members agreed the current access road is not acceptable and the preferred location for access is via a direct route from the Centre, through land owned by Correctional Services and NSW Health Department to Wine Country Drive. 

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said Council will continue to advocate for a common sense approach. 

“Our residents should not be footing the bill for the ongoing road maintenance costs of a NSW Government facility. For such a large development the community deserves better.”

“This debate has been going on for far too long and our residents deserve to be listened to. We’ll be writing to a number of NSW Government representatives including Premier Hon Gladys Berijiklian MP. We’re asking both the NSW Government and opposition to join us in supporting the rate payers of the Cessnock Local Government Area to secure a long term solution.” Cr Pynsent said.
