Charters Towers Regional Council is seeking applications for a voyage in 2019 on the tall ship “Young Endeavour” for persons aged 16 to 23 years in the region.
The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is recognised internationally as a leading youth development program, providing skills for life. These include communication, leadership, teamwork, self-esteem and a greater understanding of themselves and each other.
As most participants have never been to sea before, the youth crew are supervised and supported by carefully selected and trained Royal Australian Navy crew.
The successful candidate will be one of the 24-strong youth crew and will need to meet the challenges of sailing the tall ship and living ‘between decks’ in a close community.
Last year, Ronnie Critchley sailed from Brisbane to Mackay. “During the 11 days, we island hopped around the Great Barrier Reef, watched baby humpbacks breach… watched magnificent sunrises… and discovered things about ourselves we didn’t know existed…”
Mayor Liz Schmidt said Council is excited to send another youth on this incredible experience. “Ronnie Critchley returned last year and retold her amazing experiences. We want to give this experience to another one of our youth.
“You don’t need to have sailing experience. Just a willingness to learn and to go on an amazing adventure at sea.”
Applications are now open with a selection of voyages available for the successful applicant to choose between. Transport to the place of departure and return is the responsibility of the applicant.
For more information visit here or call Council on 07 4761 5300. Applications close at 4pm on Friday 22 March 2019.
