Playing a role in decisions that affect young people, developing new skills and increasing knowledge of local government are all opportunities local youth will experience as Council launches the Youth Action Group.

In an effort to improve engagement with our region’s young people, the initiative was developed following a recommendation from the 2018 Youth Needs Analysis.

Deputy Mayor Nigel Hutton who was a Youth Council member from 2002 – 2004 said initiatives like the Youth Action Group provide fantastic opportunities to gain valuable insight into how grassroots government contributes to so many aspects of our community.

“We want to see our region’s youth participating in making a difference to our community, to be involved in guiding decision making, and to be an advocate for issues that affect young people,” Cr Hutton said.

“Any young person aged between 12 to 24 years who lives, works or studies in Livingstone Shire can apply to be part of the group.

“Fortnightly meetings will begin on Wednesday, 20 March where members will get to work with other enthusiastic and like-minded young people to develop and implement projects and activities on issues that are important to them.”

Youth Councillor Pat Eastwood said the aim of the 2018 Youth Needs Analysis was to ensure Council programmes and activities represent the needs of young people.

“Our regions youth will play a huge role in shaping what our community looks like in the future, so it’s vital Council creates opportunities for them to share their ideas and be heard,” Cr Eastwood said.

“Council is eager to see this initiative unfold and encourages any young person who’s interested to attend the first meeting and see what it’s all about.”
