Djuki Mala brings sheer joy, energy and hilarity to Cap Coast this May!

Guaranteed to put a smile on your face and a pep in your step, Djuki Mala’s enthusiasm, joy and explosive-energy wow their audiences with a celebration of dance, storytelling and culture, and will visit the region for the first time as part of their Queensland tour.

Direct from Elcho Island in North East Arnhem Land, the group present a stunning fusion of traditional Yolngu and contemporary pop culture, dance and storytelling with a hefty dose of heart and soul.

The group will perform a public show at Yeppoon Town Hall on Friday 24 May, as well as host School workshops on Saturday, 25 May.

Djuki Mala performer Baykali Ganambarr says: “Our show tells the genesis of Djuki Mala, in a way that challenges the western anthropological view of First Nations culture. We do this with our humour, our dance, our story and our culture.

“It’s alive; it’s living, breathing, ever changing and evolving. Rooted in 75,000 years of ancestral knowledge. We take our culture out of the museum and place it very firmly in the 21st century - with a bit of circus and bling!”

Their performance was labelled a smash hit at Perth’s Fringe World and Adelaide Fringe Festivals, winning of the Dance award at both festivals including the WA Arts Editor Award. The group also won the UniSA Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Creative Arts at Adelaide Fringe 2018.

Since their WA Premiere and hugely successful Summer Festivals tour, Djuki Mala have presented sold out performances at the Sydney Opera House and at their premiere Edinburgh Festival Fringe season, which was an unprecedented success.

Now touring Queensland by popular demand, the unique, infectious, high-energy and always exuberant group will visit eight locations, including the Gold Coast, Mackay, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Gympie, Toowoomba and Ipswich and Yeppoon.

Library, Arts and Culture Councillor Pat Eastwood said if there’s one show this year that is guaranteed to leave you feeling genuinely happy then Djuki Mala is it!
