Public safety behind decision to remove four Endeavour Park trees

Gladstone Regional Council will arrange removal of four structurally unsound trees from Endeavour Park, Seventeen Seventy this week.

Following an assessment by Council’s Arborist, the decision was made to remove the diseased Eucalypts as a matter of public safety.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the four trees are located in a footpath/public space area along Endeavour Park that is highly frequented by the public and pose potential dangers to passers-by if branches fail and fall.

“This area is heritage listed and as legislation requires, tree assessments were forwarded to the Heritage department with approval granted to remove these particular trees,” Councillor Burnett said.

“Council is very mindful of its environmental responsibilities, however these trees, in their current condition, do pose a high risk to public safety and do require removal.”

Bunting has been installed in the immediate area to restrict people using this space until the trees are removed.

“Once removed, the trees will be chipped, left to compost down and be repurposed as mulch on Council gardens.”

Councillor Burnett said native trees suitable to the environmental conditions of Endeavour Park would be planted.

Tree removal works will be carried out this week (12 to 15 Mar) dependent on weather.

During this period, pedestrians and members of the public will be directed around the works area.
