State and Federal government co-funding will now be sought for a proposed new aquatic and leisure centre after Tamworth Regional Councillors tonight endorsed a business case.

The Tamworth Regional Aquatic and Leisure Business Case report details Council’s ability to deliver the community’s preferred concept design - a facility which incorporates both 50 metre outdoor and indoor pools, adventure slides and all the critical components of a modern aquatic and leisure facility.

The estimated cost for the community’s preferred concept is $67 million with an anticipated construction period of a minimum of three years.

The timing and funding models identified within the business case are projections that will assist Council in securing funding for the new facility. If Council receives financial support for a new aquatic facility, these projections will be finalised in more detail.

Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray said that the high-level of planning and community consultation has helped to develop a strategy that he is confident will bring this state-of-the-art facility a step closer to the region.

“The debate for a new aquatic facility in Tamworth has been on-going for more than 20 years and after three stages of community consultation it is evident that it’s high on the priority list of our community,” he said.

“The submission of the Business Case is the next important phase of this project. It’s an exciting step to take as we continue to work towards improved facilities and opportunities for our community that will cater to the present and the future.”

The Business Case provides detailed information in the following areas: •Project background •The case for a new facility •Rationale for investment •Options considered •Economic analysis •Proposed funding strategy
