Nowruz, meaning ‘new day’ and pronounced Now Roos, is part of a 3,000-year-old new year’s celebration on the March equinox marking the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.
Wollongong City Council has joined with Iranian, Afghani and Kurdish community partners to host a celebration, which is the biggest secular event in dozens of countries in the Middle East and East Asia. It’s the second year running Council has supported the community partners to present the celebration.
Wollongong City Acting Lord Mayor Councillor David Brown invited people to come along and enjoy the dances, live music and sample the wonderful food of Iran and Afghanistan at the event on Thursday 21 March.
“This celebration is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse into some of the diverse cultures we are fortunate to have in this vibrant city,’’ Cr Brown said.
“This celebration coincides with Harmony Day and is a great example of diverse communities working together to celebrate an important tradition and I’d encourage everyone who comes along to join in the circle dancing.”
The event runs from 6-9pm and will feature Iranian and Afghani food as a special part of the regular ‘Eat Street’ stalls.
Nowruz traditions include a major house ‘spring clean’ or “shaking the house” as referred to by Iranians and Afghanis, buying new clothes and flowers, special home decorations, and visiting elders, family members and friends’ houses to give and receive gifts.
