Liverpool Council supports justice precinct for South West Sydney

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller has added her voice to calls by The Law Society of NSW for a justice precinct in South West Sydney.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said a one-stop-shop for justice in South West Sydney would be of enormous benefit to Liverpool residents, who currently have to travel great distances to have their cases heard.

“Access to justice is an important right of all citizens, but South West Sydney residents are experiencing protracted waiting times and having to travel long distances to have their cases heard,” Mayor Waller said.

“Long wait times can be catastrophic for domestic violence victims. It adds significant strain to family disputes and financial burdens for businesses involved in court cases.”

The Law Society of NSW, led by Elizabeth Espinosa who is currently on leave from her position as General Counsel at Liverpool City Council, has launched a community-backed campaign for a new multipurpose justice precinct in South West Sydney that will meet the demand for court services now and well into the future.

“Here in South West Sydney, we are at the forefront of Australia’s population growth. We are happy to do our part, but we need the State Government to come to the party and provide the necessary infrastructure,” Mayor Waller said.

“Liverpool was supposed to have a District Court when the police station and courthouse were redeveloped. This has still not eventuated.”

The “We Support South-Western Sydney Justice Precinct” campaign is supported by the

Macarthur Regional Law Society, Liverpool Fairfield Regional Law Society, NSW Bar

Association, Campbelltown City Council, Liverpool City Council, Camden Council, Wollondilly

Shire Council, Western Sydney Business Connect, Sydney Business Chamber, NSW Police Association, Camden Region Economic Taskforce, NCOSS and the Greater Sydney Commission.
