Liverpool City Council has embarked on an education program aimed at reducing smoking in no-smoking areas of the city.

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said the campaign began in January, with staff talking to people in no-smoking zones in the city.

“A lot of people are not aware that there are some areas of our CBD where they are not allowed to smoke,” Mayor Waller said.

“We’re focusing on transit stops, which include bus and train stations as well as taxi ranks.

“Smoking is also prohibited within four metres of food service areas and 10 metres of children’s play areas.”

Mayor Waller said the long-term campaign was aimed at educating residents and CBD users, not punishing them.

“Fining people is not our aim – we want to make sure our community is aware of what the rules are around smoking,” Mayor Waller said

“We want to make sure our CBD is a great place for people who work, shop and study and that means ensuring certain places are smoke-free.”

Council has installed 30 no-smoking signs throughout the CBD to ensure people understand the regulations.
