Leaf-shaped arboretums and an iconic play space inspired by the Gordonvale water tower are two exciting elements of a plan to transform a large community park in Gordonvale.
The Kenrick Street Park and Fisher Road Park Improvement Plan – which is proposed to be implemented in several stages – is currently open for community feedback.
The plan includes leaf-shaped spaces bounded by trees to create activity and function areas. The plan also proposes a new BMX and skate park and other recreational facilities, plus a “community common” area with a lake.
A highlight is an iconic play structure which aims to combine play and a viewing tower to maximise views across the area.
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the concept had potential to create an asset that would not only serve the local community but also draw visitors from across the region.
“These plans are on par with our other destination parks including Munro Martin Parklands, Cattana Wetlands, the Botanic Gardens and Sugarworld Gardens,” Cr Manning said.
“It is a sophisticated plan that has dedicated areas for events, park activities and even a neighbourhood centre.”
Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said local interest in the plan has been very strong and he had received positive feedback to the concept.
“Kenrick Park is the only significant open space on the western side of the Bruce Highway within this rapidly growing residential area and it makes sense to develop it into something special both for surrounding residents and the whole community,” Cr Moller said.
“The idea of the play structure based on the shape of the water tower has been popular in the feedback so far. We wanted to include something that screamed “Gordonvale” and our first thoughts were of the Walsh’s Pyramid and the old water tower.”
The upgrade to the 5.7 hectare park to “destination park” status will be staged once the plan has been finalised.
Community feedback on the Kenrick Street Park and Fisher Road Park Improvement Plan closes on Sunday 31 March. View the plan and provide comments.
