Work on the much anticipated Mellor Street streetscaping project is due to start on Tuesday 26 March after design and construction plans were finalised this week.
The $500,000 project is entirely funded by the Queensland Government Works for Queensland program.
Mellor Street is the link between Gympie’s Heritage Rail and civic precincts and is unique in that it accommodates local businesses as well as residential houses.
Infrastructure Services portfolio holder, Cr Bob Leitch, said the project will “no doubt enhance one of Gympie’s busiest precincts.”
“Mellor Street is more than just a link between the Old Railway Station and Mary Street,” Cr Leitch said.
“It is one of the only places in town with a mix of houses, commercial businesses and cafés. It is important that Mellor Street looks and functions at its best, for residents, traders and visitors alike.”
Works include fixing the existing footpath and curbing, creating on-street car parking, reducing the speed limit to 50 km/h and planting of new trees.
During construction, it is anticipated there will be slight disruptions to the regular traffic flow of Mellor Street.
Temporary lane closures will be in place; however, traffic will still be able to travel in both directions under traffic controllers.
Pathway closures are also expected.
Signed detours will be in place for pedestrian traffic.
