Council Backs Classic Wallabies Match

Residents of the Moree Plains and the North West are in for a treat on Saturday, 23 March as the Moree Rugby Union Club welcomes former Wallabies to Moree for a Wallabies Classic Match, thanks to a $2000 donation from Moree Plains Shire Council.

The donation – which was awarded through Council’s Public Donations financial assistance program - will contribute directly to the cost of hosting the Wallabies Classic Match which is expected to draw huge crowds to the region.

Moree Rugby Union Club President, Paul King thanked the Council for its donation, "this is a great event for our town and a fantastic opportunity to watch and meet some well-known former Wallabies”.

“With up to 3000 people predicted to attend, we are hoping that the influx of people will also help out local business in this difficult, dry time,” said Mr King.

The Classic Wallabies will take on the Central North over 35’s Barbarian team, made up of an invitational side from Moree and some of the region’s best representative players.  The afternoon will include a host of curtain raiser matches featuring local clubs and players of all ages ahead of the main game.

In addition to the Match, the Classic Wallabies team will be holding a coaching clinic for Junior Clubs across the Central North zone and will be visiting local schools to teach the students the fundamentals of rugby.

Mr King remarked “these junior skills development clinics, fundraising events and exhibition matches are vital in supporting the ongoing growth and development of grassroots rugby in towns like Moree”.
