"Everyone Belongs" - is the key message for Harmony Day, which is celebrated on Thursday 21 March.
From the traditional owners of this land, to the many who have come from countries around the world, we are fortunate to benefit from the richness of the many cultures that make up our nation.
Harmony Day in Australia coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The Town of Bassendean is proud to be a Town that welcomes everyone. The Town is recognised as a Refugee Welcome Zone, having made a commitment in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community.
The Town also recognises the vast and significant contributions refugees have made to Australian society. By making this Declaration, the Town is committed to supporting the people who make the difficult journey to Australia to seek our protection.
“Following last Friday’s events in Christchurch, New Zealand, our hearts go out to the victims and their families. At a time when the Town of Bassendean will be celebrating unity, inclusion and respect for diversity, it will also be mourning the precious lives lost in this tragedy”, stated Mayor Renee McLennan.
As a sign of respect and mourning for the victims and families impacted by the shootings in New Zealand, the Town of Bassendean will this week fly the Town's flags at half-mast.
