Great Effort for Clean Up Australian Day

Clean Up Australia Day, which originated in 1989, is a nationwide event that focuses on cleaning up rubbish in communities across Australia. Historically the event is held on the Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend in March. However, different communities often take part in the event on a variety of different days.   

Throughout late February and early March, 35 sites across the City of Rockingham were registered for cleanups by volunteer groups. Rubbish collection occurred in three stages, with registered businesses the first to do their part for the environment. 

Schools and youth groups were second to clean up, while community groups were the final volunteers to hit the streets in search of litter. To assist in the cleanup, the City’s LitterBusters were available to collect rubbish bags and to dispose of any recyclable items where possible. 

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels thanked the volunteers who took part in the cleanup. 

"Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together and boost sustainability in our City, and I must congratulate all of the volunteers who took part in this year’s event," Mayor Sammels said. 

"It was fantastic to see more than 700kgs of rubbish collected throughout a number of local parks, reserves and beaches. With such an array of wonderful environmental assets on our doorstep it’s crucial we continue to preserve them for future generations and I thank everyone who helped make Clean Up Australia Day 2019 such a great success."
