South Australians are invited to attend a vigil this Thursday 21 March in Elder Park to remember the victims of last week’s terrorist attack on Christchurch's Al Noor mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre. The vigil is an opportunity for people to come together in a quiet moment of peaceful reflection. Premier Steven Marshall says South Australians stand united with New Zealanders in their grief.
“Last week’s events in our Sister City of Christchurch were shocking and our thoughts are with the people of New Zealand after this devastating attack,” said Premier Marshall.
“New Zealand is now having to come to terms with an act of unimaginable horror, and we stand in solidarity with the Muslim community both in Christchurch and here in South Australia.
“Despite this, the calm, firm, courageous resolve of the New Zealand people shines a light for all of us on how political extremism in all its forms must be confronted and condemned.
“I encourage South Australians of all faiths to attend this vigil and show their support for our friends across the Tasman.
“We are committed to ensuring that our state continues to embrace diversity and to make sure that we can be the most accepting, respectful and tolerant society we can possibly be.”
Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor says Adelaide and Christchurch have enjoyed a special bond since joining in a Sister City relationship 47 years ago.
“This vigil provides everyone with the opportunity to quietly stand with the people of Christchurch and communicate their love and support in the wake of this tragic incident.
“It also gives our community a chance to show that we embrace and welcome people from all cultures and that we stand as one against intolerance.”
The Adelaide Vigil for Christchurch will be held at 7:45pm and be jointly hosted by the Government of South Australia and the City of Adelaide.
