$2 million for new Croydon Community Precinct

The Croydon Community Precinct project received a $2 million kick start this afternoon with Deakin MP Michael Sukkar visiting Croydon to announce the Federal Government’s funding towards the project.

Maroondah Mayor Councillor Rob Steane said the project would create a new Community Precinct in the heart of Croydon.

The Croydon Community Precinct will bring together a range of community services, programs, and activities for people of all ages, in accessible and integrated community hubs, and within a parkland setting.

“Most importantly, the new Croydon Community Precinct will create opportunities for social connection; improved health and wellbeing; linkages to our cultural and heritage history; and flexibility to meet the current and future needs of the community,” Cr Steane said.

“We are currently completing a Masterplan to identify and guide the future redevelopment of the Precinct, but we know there will be a focus on improved connectivity with the key aspects of the area, including the recreational hubs, the shopping, the newly built Croydon Town Square, and the services and public transport hub,” Cr Steane said.

Cr Steane said the area was already home to a number of Council’s community and sporting facilities, including Aquahub, a Maternal & Child Health Centre, EV’s Youth Centre, Maroondah Occasional Care Centre, and Keystone Hall.

The Precinct also contains other community and recreational facilities such as a Library, RSL, Bowls Club, Scout Hall, Senior Citizen’s Centre and the Kindergarten.

“Given the age of some of these facilities, many of them need to be improved to ensure we can meet the anticipated community needs and service requirements well into the future,” Cr Steane said.

“So this is an opportune time for us to look at the entire area and strategically plan for a new integrated civic and community precinct,’ Cr Steane said.

Initial preparation for a Croydon Civic Precinct masterplan commenced over 12 months ago, and has included consultation with key user groups and stakeholders in the precinct.

“Further consultation with the user groups and the broader community will continue over the coming months to inform the development of a draft concept plan.

“The draft concept plan will be based on the development of community hubs which will be created by consolidating and integrating the facilities currently in the precinct,” Cr Steane said.

“It is proposed that the first community hub could accommodate the Croydon branch Library, Council service centre, a business hub, a centre for community wellbeing, all community groups currently in the precinct, as well as providing space for other community groups to call the Community Hub home,” Cr Steane said.

“This is a very exciting project for Maroondah, and I thank the Australian Government for their $2 million contribution to our vision of creating a new integrated Civic and Community precinct in Croydon benefiting our community for years to come,” Cr Steane said.
