People from all faiths and walks of life will come together on Thursday to sign Liverpool’s Declaration on Cultural and Religious Harmony and renew their commitment to live together in peace.
The horrific events in Christchurch last week have sparked a groundswell of community action around the world – and particularly in Liverpool, home to people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures.
“All of us here at Liverpool have been deeply touched by what happened in Christchurch,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
“We are incredibly proud of our diversity and commitment to inclusion at Liverpool but we don’t take it for granted. The Declaration of Cultural and Religious Harmony is about reaffirming our joint commitment to work together for the benefit of the whole community.”
On Thursday, people from all religious faiths, Members of Parliament, Councillors and community groups will gather in Macquarie Mall to sign the Declaration.
“Liverpool is a welcoming community,” Mayor Waller said. “We draw strength from a society made up of people of all cultures and faiths.
“Every day we show through our actions how to live together in peace and harmony but on Thursday we recognise the power of words to focus us all on what is important by signing the Declaration of Cultural and Religious Harmony.”
Liverpool’s Declaration on Cultural and Religious Harmony is being organised by Western Sydney Migrant Resource Centre and Liverpool City Council. The signing will take place at Macquarie Mall, Liverpool, on Thursday 21 March, 5-6pm.
