Tree removal works to begin at Gardiner Reserve

Parts of Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne, including the playground area, will be closed to the public next month for a short period while tree removal works take place.

Eight mature Monterey Cypress (Hesperocyparis Macrocarpa) trees will be removed from the area surrounding the sports oval due to public safety concerns.

An independent arborist recently assessed 21 trees at the reserve as part of Council’s annual tree audit program and recommended the trees be removed.

The trees were found to be in very poor condition, with significant deadwood from previous dieback which present a high risk of tree failure, prompting serious concerns for public safety. Council staff removed a significant amount of deadwood from the trees in recent years but the trees have continued to decline and lose a significant number of limbs.

Works are expected to begin in April, with a large section of the reserve including the playground area to be closed to the public for up to two weeks.

Replacement trees, all native species, have already been planted in the reserve.
