Campbelltown to lower flag to half-mast for Christchurch

Campbelltown City Council will lower its flag to half-mast tomorrow in remembrance of the victims of the mosques massacre in New Zealand.

The flag, in the forecourt of the Council building in Queen Street, Campbelltown, will be lowered at 1.03pm at the start of the daily Zuhr (or noon) prayer that takes place after midday.

It will fly at half-mast to honour the 50 killed and 30 injured during the prayer session at the Al Noor mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in the city of Christchurch exactly a week earlier.

Council encourages everyone to take a moment at this time to reflect on the tragedy.

“In the wake of this appalling and devastating act of terrorism we wish to express our deep condolences and support for both the people of Christchurch and the Muslim community,” said Mayor George Brticevic.

“Ours’ is a diverse and inclusive community of people of more than 100 cultural backgrounds and we stand in absolute solidarity against racism and any kind of targeted religious terrorism,” said Cr Brticevic.

“In addition we have many New Zealand citizens living and working in Campbelltown and we remind them of our enduring friendship and our sympathy for the deep hurt that has been visited upon them,” he said.

“Our message to everyone in Campbelltown and beyond is that we are proud of our diversity, we do not tolerate prejudice and, as a community, we stand as one.”
