Benn Sargood, Head Technician at East Gippsland Shire Council’s Forge Theatre and Arts Hub, is hosting a free workshop for local young people interested in the sound and lighting industry on Wednesday, April 10.
The ‘Behind the Scenes’ workshop will give participants an insight into theatre lighting and sound and is a hands-on way to learn about this exciting career.
“I started to take an interest in lighting and sound while at high school and 16 years later I still love the industry and hope to impart some of my experience and knowledge to local young people,” Benn said.
“Contrary to popular belief being a ‘tech’ is not just a boy thing, as many girls are getting interested in the profession and I encourage them to come along and try out the theatre’s new sound system.”
Apart from working part-time at the Forge, Benn also works across Australia touring with many shows and events showcasing his sound and lighting talents.
Council recently upgraded the theatre’s sound system by purchasing a $120,000 digital console, which allows coverage throughout the whole auditorium.
He also mentors sound technicians involved in amateur productions like the Bairnsdale Production Line Theatre Company’s fast approaching Sound of Music.
The ‘Behind the Scenes’ sound and lighting workshop is on Wednesday, April 10 from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The workshop is suitable for ages 12 – 25 years and there is no cost. Bookings are required at the Forge Theatre and Arts Hub on 5152 1482 or book online eastgippsland.vic.gov.au/forgetheatre
The workshop is supported by funding through a Creative Victoria Engaging Audiences grant.
The Forge Theatre and Arts Hub opened in 2010 and has hosted over 600 shows providing East Gippsland audiences with wonderful live theatre experiences and entertainment.
