Community encouraged to go ‘lights out’ for Earth Hour

Council is doing its bit to show support for Australia in meeting its international climate change commitments, while encouraging the community to do the same.
Council will turn off all non-essential lights at its facilities to participate in Earth Hour 2019 on Saturday 30 March between 8.30pm and 9.30pm as an opportunity for residents to call for urgent action on climate change and to halt biodiversity loss.
Environment Councillor Tom Wyatt said while this may be a small gesture in the face of the huge challenge that is climate change, it sends a strong message that our Shire supports this important initiative.
“Every year, Council takes part in the Australian campaign led by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), which is designed to draw attention to tackling climate change and create a talking point for people to get involved and help out,” Cr Wyatt said.
“As a community, it’s very important that we protect our environment in every way we can – big or small, as every step in the right direction counts.
“Last year, a record 18,000 landmarks in 7,000 cities around the world participated as part of their activities to call for action to reduce the causes of climate change.
“Council is proud to be part of supporting the global phenomenon that is Earth Hour and strongly encourages all members of the Livingstone Community to also turn their lights off for an hour, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, on Saturday 30 March to raise this number significantly.”
Council is involved in a range of initiatives which facilitate positive environmental sustainability outcomes around the Shire, including;
•Developing a climate change governance framework for the organisation and participating in the Queensland Climate Resilient Councils programme; •Developing and implementing a Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan; •Involvement in the Reef Guardian Councils and Habitat Stepping Stones programmes; •Reducing Council’s carbon footprint through the development of a Carbon Strategy and involvement in the Cities Power Partnerships programme; and •Development of a shire-wide Biosecurity Strategy.
