Tuesday, 26 March 2019

Councillors have tonight voted in favour of the proposed upgrades to finish Fitzroy Plaza that will see additional comfortable seating, shade in the form of living umbrellas and the planting of mature trees implemented into the multi-purpose outdoor space.

Councillors agreed that more adequate shade and comfortable seating are crucial in making the space more enjoyable for the public to utilise on a day to day basis and for key community events.

The estimated cost of the upgrade is $816,885. Council will use the remaining $349,000 funds in the Fitzroy Street Upgrade Project budget plus additional $467,885 allocated from the Civil Construction Reserve funds to execute the project.

A longer-term recommendation to Council is to investigate catenary lighting to be strung across the space to create a night time lighting feature. Councillors also raised the need to address traffic management in the area in the future.

It is expected that the endorsed upgrades will be finalised quickly and efficiently, in time for key annual event, Fiesta La Peel.
