HomeNews Articles2019March 2019 Councillors support proactive water conservation movesWith no substantial rain forecast to end the current drought, Tamworth Regional Councillors have tonight supported undertaking additional activities to help further conserve treated water supplies.
A similar initiative Council undertook in 2008 following a prolonged drought period resulted in considerable water saving measures being taken up by a number of large water using businesses.
Council expects to appoint an independent auditor in early April with on-site inspections to start in mid-April 2019. There will be no cost to business or commercial operators who decide to take up this opportunity.
Acting Mayor Phil Betts said the additional activities not only aim to conserve drinking water supplies but to further educate residents and businesses about water restrictions and water saving measures which can be undertaken.
“We all know we will be living with the drought for some time to come and Council is getting on the front foot with some additional actions to ensure we can continue to provide our community with the water they need,” he said. “We all felt it was best that we do this sooner rather than later – we want to be proactive.
“Some of these initiatives are actions we have not tried before. We will do everything we can to boost our region’s water security as this terrible drought continues.”
In addition to the water audits for business, Council will:
Develop a pack for use by local accommodation providers to raise awareness among visitors of local water restrictions and inform them of how they can reduce water use during their stay. Defer the need for new residential and commercial development to complete landscaping before an Occupation Certificate is issued. Increase community awareness with water sustainability information booths at local events. Provide alternate sources of water for Council and external roadworks, where possible, including seeking approval to use water from one of the Council-owned bores near the Carter Street Playing Fields.
