Winner of the 2018 Sculpture in the Garden Michael Purdy with his work, Steel City.

Artists and sculptors are encouraged to put pen to paper and get their submissions in for the Wollongong Acquisitive Sculpture Award 2020.

The submission for a sculpture concept that inspires conversation and sparks imagination needs to be in before 5pm on Tuesday 11 June 2019.

Artists selected to participate will receive a $1,000 subsidy to go towards the development of their artwork, and their work will be exhibited in the Wollongong Botanic Garden during autumn 2020.

In addition the winning artist will receive $30,000 and have their work remain on permanent display in the Garden. There is also a non-acquisitive People’s Choice Prize of $3,000.

It’ll be the third time the exhibition has been held in the Garden and the winning artwork will be added to the Keiraville space’s growing outdoor sculpture collection that includes Michael Purdy’s Steel City and Louis Pratt’s King Coal, who won in 2018 and 2016, respectively. Both remain on exhibition in the Garden.

“I’d encourage artists and sculptors to take this opportunity to consider the context namely the Illawarra, the Gardens and our community and develop a sculptural concept that they believe represents who we are,’’ Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“This popular exhibition and art award is in its third year and, I anticipate, will be bigger and better than ever. We know this exhibition is hugely popular with our community and it’s a great opportunity for an artist to share their work with a diverse audience, bring home a $30,000 prize and have their work added to the Garden’s growing collection.’’

Note to Sculptors: Works need to be in material that can survive the outdoor garden context, is durable, and may be touched by visitors to the Garden.

For more information on the submissions process, artists should visit Council’s website or call Council’s Customer Service team on (02) 4227 7111 or by email to Council.
