$3m in Federal funding secured for Kensington Gardens Reserve

In a statement today, Minister for Defence and Federal Member for Sturt, the Hon Chirstopher Pyne MP announced that a funding request from the City of Burnside for the Kensington Gardens Reserve Master Plan has been successful.

The City of Burnside welcomes the Federal Government’s investment of $3m into this significant project for the betterment of the Burnside community. This news is a milestone moment for the project, allowing work to accelerate on the site; resulting in a revitalisation of the south east corner by replacing the existing unsafe artificial lake with a wetland to treat urban water pollution entering Stonyfell Creek.

Mayor Anne Monceaux said this investment into the local community will be well received and was pleased the City of Burnside was able to secure this funding.

“I am delighted with this announcement from Minister Pyne and thank the Federal Government for this important injection of funds which will greatly assist with the implementation and rollout of the Kensington Gardens Reserve Master Plan,” Mayor Monceaux said.

“Our community will see an improved sport and recreational offering for residents and visiting players through eight reconfigured Tennis Australia tournament standard tennis courts with lighting, complementing existing facilities and increased patronage,” said Mayor Monceaux.

“Our community will benefit through enhanced public amenity for the surrounding area, encouraging greater recreational use and outdoor activities, in addition to achieving an environmental solution to the existing pollution, and public safety issues associated with the existing artificial lake,” said Mayor Monceaux.

“The enhancement of the biodiversity of the reserve, provision of habitat for birdlife and improved ecosystem function, coupled with the invaluable opportunities for nature play, public access and education, result in a broad range of positive outcomes for all of our residents,” Mayor Monceaux said.

“I also take this opportunity to thank Minister Pyne as the Member for Sturt, for his contribution, dedication and service to the City of Burnside over the last 26 years and wish him well in his retirement from the Australian Parliament”.
