Dendy Street Beach Pavilion

The Mayor, Cr Michael Heffernan, has reaffirmed Council's commitment to progressing the delivery of the new Dendy Street Beach Pavilion despite the delays.

Cr Michael Heffernan said:

"Council is firmly committed to delivering a new pavilion for the lifesaving club and its members to be able to perform their training and duties in a modern and fit for purpose facility.  It is vital that the Club has the valuable resources and facilities they need to deliver its important community service to the benefit of the ever increasing number of visitors to this iconic beach.

"The slow progress of the new lifesaving club is particularly frustrating. Council however must abide by the VCAT appeals process for a planning permit and fully address the Environment Protection Authority’s issues related to the soil contamination discovered at the site.

“Dendy Street Beach is one of Melbourne’s most significant tourist icons and is the most visited location in Bayside. These new facilities will ensure that the iconic location can be safely enjoyed now and into the future."

Council is working with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to determine the action required to remediate contaminated soil on the foreshore. Importantly Council has complied with all of the obligations required by the EPA and Council will continue to work with the EPA in a cooperative and meaningful manner.

There are objections to the planning permit to be heard by VCAT and we are waiting for VCAT to confirm a date for the hearing which is expected to be held in the second half of 2019.
