In May of 2018, Council began work on the Water Infrastructure Upgrade Project (WIUP) which included the construction of a new water treatment plant and other upgrades in Charters Towers.

The new construction will see the addition of a new clarifier and new gravity filters with a 60+ year life.

The upgrades will include:

Computer control systems Electrical switchboards Installation of a backup generator

Other works include upgrades to the Town reservoirs, the intakes on the weir wall, booster pump station and Burdekin weir pump station.

Due to the severe weather in February work has had some delays, however, the upgrade project is progressing well.

Crews have completed all the external concrete structures and fabrication of filter backwash trough outlets.

Work has commenced on the booster pump station upgrade and the fit-out to the filters and clarifier.

The upgrade project, along with the other works, will cost a total of $21.55M, with co-funding from the Federal Government of $8.65M.

The works will increase water production capacity to 22 ML per day from the current maximum of 18 ML per day.

Its Council’s commitment and priority to provide reliability and security of Charters Towers’ water supply while ensuring that the impact on the community both financially and through water restrictions during construction are kept to a minimum.

Water security is essential for our future growth and to attract development and agricultural opportunities.
