Liverpool City Council has responded to a growing need for car parking in the Liverpool CBD by announcing the creation of an extra 350 parking spaces.
Council resolved at Wednesday night’s meeting to add 250 spaces at Woodward Park. A shuttle bus service will transport commuters from Woodward Park to the CBD.
“Liverpool is growing and changing – our new university campuses have brought more students into the city, new businesses are moving in and jobs are being created every day,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
“Council is focused on Liverpool’s future as Sydney’s third CBD, but we recognise we need to get the basics right. Council is committed to ensuring Liverpool’s rise is accompanied by the services and amenities our residents will need to live and thrive here.
“More jobs and people in the CBD means a greater need for car parking and that’s why Council has committed to providing these extra 350 spaces.”
Last year Council rezoned 25 hectares in the heart of Liverpool aimed at encouraging new businesses and doubling the resident population in the CBD.
Design work for the new parking will begin immediately and work is due to start in coming months.
Council also approved additional car parking at 68 Speed Street in the CBD. This site provides for a further 100 spaces.
Council’s parking initiative follows recent State Government promises to add 700 parking spaces at Edmondson Park station, 500 at Liverpool Hospital and 350 at Leppington station. Council will be pursuing these commitments with the State Government to ensure residents are able to use these additional spaces as soon as possible.
