In Autumn 2019, we will undertake works at the Norwood Ave/Kinane Street access ramp/toilet at the southern end of Dendy Street Beach to improve access and safety for beach users. The access path and seawall in front of the toilet block will be upgraded.

Work includes:

Harvesting clean sand from the northern section of the beach for sandbag fill Installation of new timber beach access stairs and sandbag retaining wall Removal of existing asphalt path and replace with exposed aggregate concrete path Upgrades to fencing and bicycle facilities.

This work is part of the Dendy Street Beach Masterplan. Construction will commence in early April 2019.

Coastal erosion works

We are working to address the impact of coastal erosion at Holloway Bend at the southern end of Dendy Street Beach and prevent further wave and wind damage.

This includes installing a low sandbag wall to protect the fragile dunes and coastal vegetation adjacent to Holloway Bend from further erosion. The 45m long wall will be constructed above the high tide mark to protect the foreshore similar to one installed at Ricketts Point.

The work includes:

Harvesting clean sand from the northern section of the beach for sandbag fill Excavation of sandbag wall base Construction of a low sandbag wall to protect the dunes Minor beach renourishment using clean sand.

Construction will commence in late April 2019.

Council has sought expert guidance from coastal engineers and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on these works. Sand for the sandbag wall and beach renourishment has been tested and found to be clean and suitable for this purpose. As the area is now a registered Heritage Place, Council has sought and received a Heritage Permit for the works from Heritage Victoria.

Beach and coastal path detours will be in place during the works to ensure the safety of beach users.

Lifesaving Pavilion

Council remains firmly committed to delivering a new pavilion at Dendy Street Beach for Brighton Lifesaving Club and its members.

Due to planning objections, VCAT approval is required before the project can progress. We are waiting for VCAT to confirm a date to hear objections to the planning permit.

Soil contamination

We are working with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to determine the action required to remediate contaminated soil on the Dendy Street Beach foreshore. Council has complied with the obligations required by the EPA and will continue to work with the EPA in a cooperative and meaningful manner.
