Revegetating to build a stronger natural environment

Ten thousand trees, shrubs and groundcovers will be provided during the City of Swan’s Rural Properties Revegetation giveaway this year.

The program offers free native plants to City residents whose properties are 4,000 square metres (one acre) or greater in size.

The program was previously only available for properties greater than 10,000 square metres which means more residents can participate than ever before.

Eligible residents can place orders online from Monday, April 8 until 4.30pm sharp on Friday, May 3.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the aim of the program is to complement the natural environment and increase the tree canopy.

"Conserving and enhancing natural vegetation is a key strategy identified in our Strategic Community Plan," he said.

"Approximately 60 per cent of vegetation in the City is on private property, demonstrating how important it is to work with our community to build a stronger natural environment."

The plants available in the program are adapted to the region's soils and climate and have low watering requirements.

Pearce Ward Councillor Cate McCullough said local natives provide the best food and habitat for local fauna and promote healthy environments such as waterways.

"Other ways you can help create a healthier environment include becoming a Friends Group member to help to conserve and protect a local reserve," she said.

"You can also create a water-wise verge at home, and use the South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) guides to help you select local native plants for your garden and use fertilisers in a more effective and responsible way."

This year’s program is now completely paperless with all order forms and plant information located on the City's website.
