If weather conditions are favourable an ecological burn will be conducted at Gramatan Avenue Heathland Reserve tomorrow - Tuesday 2 April between 8am and 12pm.
Ecological burns are conducted in accordance with strict safety and control procedures. If weather conditions on the scheduled day are not suitable, the burn will be postponed.
The burn will cover the section of the heathland closest to the Sunset Avenue and is expected to take approx. 45 minutes.
Burns are an important environmental management tool to promote revegetation of Bayside’s indigenous heathlands and encourage bio-diversity. Ecological burns are a key action of Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan (2018-2027).
Residents living within 250 metres of the Heathland have been advised of the planned burn.
Homes will be door knocked by Council and Citywide staff between 8am and 9.30am on the day to advise if the burn will proceed.
If the burn proceeds, local residents should keep all doors and windows closed and remove washing from the line.
In the weeks following the burn some ‘scorching’ of emerging weed seedlings will be conducted.
The ecological burn has been approved by the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board.
An ecological burn is also planned for Long Hollow Heathland Sanctuary on Tuesday 9 April.
