The plastic hawk silhouettes have been installed to deter flocks of long-billed corellas that have recently been defoliating the upper canopies of several taller heritage pine trees around Lake Wendouree.

They are mounted on fibreglass rods which enable them to sway around in the wind and appear to hover above the trees.

Hopefully when there is decent rainfall, the corellas will start to concentrate more so on their preferred food source being onion grass.

However, the corellas should avoid the trees for up to about three months before the scare hawks become less effective.

The City of Ballarat will monitor the situation and decide if the hawks can be removed or there is a need to relocate them to nearby trees if the problem persists.
