Waste to Art 2019 Competition and Workshop

Lithgow City Council has announced the return of the Waste to Art competition to Eskbank House Museum. 

This year’s theme is baling twine and strapping.  Be inspired by the possibilities of these materials or choose your own waste material to upcycle into art. 

Works will be exhibited in Eskbank House Museum‘s beautiful heritage buildings from May 29 to July 14.  Finalists from across the state will go on to the regional exhibition in Oberon’s art deco gem the Malachi Gilmore Hall in July.

The competition embraces all ages, individuals, groups and all levels of ability.  Make a work with your classmates or friends.  Get motivated to make your first ever artwork for the community category or enter alongside other established artists from the region.  If you’re not sure how to get started, book a place in our upcoming Waste to Art workshop with local artist Prue Mogg.  Prue is an experienced teacher who will guide you through the first stages of creating a competition entry.  The workshop will run on Sunday April 14 from 10.30am.

 “I invite all Lithgow residents to participate in this year’s Waste to Art competition,” said Mayor Clr Ray Thompson. “This is a wonderful opportunity to exhibit your work in a public gallery while raising awareness about reusing waste.  The Lithgow LGA is brimming with creative people.  Local entrants did exceptionally well in last year’s regional exhibition.”

Eskbank House Museum staff will be accepting competition entries from May 8 to May 24.

Waste to Art Workshop with Prue Mogg

Kickstart your Waste to Art project with this inspiring workshop.  Prue Mogg will guide you through conceptualising and beginning to make a work to enter into this year’s competition.  This workshop is intergenerational.  Everyone is welcome.  Places are limited, so please reserve your space soon.

Competition categories

Works may be 2D (for example a poster, painting, collage, drawing or print), 3D (a sculpture or installation) or functional items (for example, furniture, jewellery or wearable art). Individual or group entries will be accepted in all categories as follows:

We recommend that non-professional artists enter works into this category.

We ask that professional artists enter works into this category.  For the purpose of this competition a professional artist is defined as an individual who may not necessarily have formal art education but exhibits in solo or group exhibitions.

Eskbank House will accept photographs of large works which are mounted and ready to hang into this category.  The works themselves will not be exhibited.
