Ten mid-century properties in Beaumaris and Black Rock will be considered for heritage protection after being nominated by their owners.

The nominations were made via Council’s voluntary process which was adopted in April 2018. More than 6,500 property owners were invited to participate.

Council is committed to protecting Bayside’s heritage for future generations and recognising the significance of mid-century modern architecture to our prized neighbourhood character.

By adopting a voluntary process, Council sought to strike a balance between protecting valuable heritage buildings and respecting the concerns of property owners.

A proposed mandatory process attracted considerable community opposition and feedback that it was unacceptable to many property owners.

Nominated properties will now be assessed for heritage significance. Properties assessed as significant will be listed in a heritage overlay via a planning scheme amendment process later in 2019.
