Cassowary Coast Regional Council announced today that Council’s CEO James Gott had stayed all action for an unspecified period to sell Chjowai Housing Cooperative’s housing stock for rates arrears.

Mayor John Kremastos said he was delighted to have received correspondence from Deputy Premier Jackie Trad requesting that the stay be enacted to allow the State Government adequate time to work with Chjowai to gain a full understanding of the organisation’s financial position and longer-term ability to meet the current debt.

The stay would also assist with preventing unnecessary hardship for tenants and the community while the matter was reviewed and better understood.

Mayor Kremastos said he was delighted to express the Council’s thanks and praise for Ms Trad’s help to date and he looked forward to working collaboratively with a view to finding a long-term solution.

“Ms Trad has demonstrated her continuing care for our community and her ongoing commitment to the people of our region. I am personally grateful for this and I know this gratitude is shared by my Council and the CEO,” Cr Kremastos said
