Suicide Prevention Forum

The Barossa Council is calling on the community to support the establishment of a Suicide Prevention Network within the region. Mayor, Michael ‘Bim’ Lange, is pleased to be making steps toward the establishment of the network, saying “the aim is to ensure there are lifesaving conversations about suicide, to reduce stigma and bring education and training to the Barossa to increase awareness”.

The establishment of the local network is a result of the Hon John Dawkins’, Premier’s Advocate for Suicide Prevention, address to Council in February where he outlined the South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan (2017 – 2021), which includes three key areas to prevent suicide in SA: making people our priority, empowering communities and translating evidence into practice. To help bring this vision to life the Office of the Premier’s Advocate for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with SA Health and the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist Suicide Prevention staff will provide support to establish a local network within the region, including grant funding.

As Mayor Lange is aware, there are “great people in the community” that can help in establishing this vital network, and therefore, he is extending the invitation to local community groups and individuals to attend the forum to be held at The Barossa Council Nuriootpa office on 13 May from 6.30pm.
