The majority of the temporary fence recently constructed on the Ashfield Flats will be removed from Monday next week.

A section of the fence of roughly 30 metres will remain towards the dog beach area to protect the foreshore.

The decision comes out of a public meeting organised by Dave Kelly MLA on Thursday 28th March and attended by representatives from the WA Planning Commission and the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH), residents and interested action groups. Concerns were raised at the meeting about the lack of community consultation conducted by the DPLH in regards to the temporary fence, which was reportedly impinging on the community’s sense of connection to the river. The DPLH acting Director General, Matt Darcey, committed to having the majority of the fence removed, and this has been supported by the Minister for Planning.

The location of the temporary fencing is indicated in the sketch below and the photo above shows the type of fencing that was erected.
