Community art to feature in Town Beach Project

As construction continues on the exciting upgrades at Town Beach, work is happening behind the scenes on a range of art and historical projects.

A team headed by the Broome Historical Society and Nyamba Buru Yawuru is working with the Shire on a range of projects to celebrate the cultural history of the precinct as a traditional living area, and as a link to the rest of the world through the old tramway and old jetty.

Projects include:

 Signage highlighting sites of historical importance. Community Wood Carving Project - six timber animal carvings created by youth working with Agunya and Juvenile Justice. Community Tile Project - ceramic tiles produced by community members, in partnership with artist Terricita Corpus, YAC and Broome Senior High School. Goods Shed Screen - an image on a perforated screen of the old Goods Shed. “Arrivals” – text and handprints printed onto concrete walls representing people who came to Broome and were processed at the Customs House in the early to mid 1900s. “Ngarrangunil” - Artwork that explains the Yawuru people’s connection to the area.

The community art and historical information will be rolled out as part of the final stage of the project to upgrade the parkland and greenspace, that will follow work on the new internal road and parking, rock seawall, grassed terraces and coastal walkway.
