Youth Council seeks community representatives

Young adults are invited to tell Corangamite Shire what matters to them by nominating for one of two new community positions on the Youth Council.

Councillor representatives to the Youth Council, Jo Beard and Wayne Oakes encouraged Shire residents aged between 19 and 25 to make the most of the opportunity.

“Unfortunately, we found it difficult to have representation of this age group in the past, but we are keen to understand what they need and what they would like to see achieved in their community,” Cr Beard said.

“It is important we understand their thoughts on the issues that affect people in their age group, what their aspirations are, and what support they need to achieve the goals of all young people in Corangamite.

“The 19-25-year-olds are important voices and important contributors in our communities. We want them to be represented and enable them to have a positive influence.”

Cr Beard said the successful applicants would be able to raise awareness of issues affecting young people, such as health, recreational or social needs.

“They will also have the opportunity to build networks with other young people who will go on to be the Shire’s movers and shakers and leaders of the future.”

Cr Oakes said being part of the Youth Council was a great opportunity to learn new skills, develop leadership and make a difference.

“Young people who sit on the Youth Council get to learn how local government works and contribute to the Shire’s youth strategy, which benefits their peers,” he said.

“It’s also a way develop their confidence, team work and communication and project management skills.

“The Youth Council is a way for rurally isolated young people to identify needs in their communities, and to work on addressing them.

“We hope to fill the positions before the Next Youth Council meeting on Monday 29 April.”
