Animal registration due

Published on 01 April 2019

Gannawarra Shire Council residents are reminded that animal registration renewals are due on Wednesday, 10 April.

Animal registration is required under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and all dogs and cats over three months of age must be registered with Council and microchipped.

“Funds received from Council’s animal registrations provide more than just a lost and found service for your cat or dog,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Registration fees cover Council’s pound expenses, as well as ensure animal management staff are employed to attend nuisance complaints, investigate dog attacks, conduct patrols, undertake domestic animal business audits and investigate dog and cat welfare issues.”

Owners receive discount registrations if they currently hold an eligible pension card, or if their pet is aged over 10 years, a dog kept for working stock, registered with an applicable organisation or de-sexed, which also prevents unwanted breeding.

If you are entitled to a pension concession discount, please present your card when paying your renewal at one of Council’s Customer Service Centres in Cohuna or Kerang.

A late payment fee of $38.00 per animal may apply after 11 April 2019.

“Registering your animal is one way to ensure you are a responsible pet owner,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“Other responsible animal practices include ensuring your pets are securely confined on your property, are exercised regularly, receive a suitable diet, are not kept in vehicles on hot days and are vaccinated.”
