Have you ever wondered why the water running from your taps is safe to drink or the air from the air conditioner at the shopping centre is safe to breathe? Or who makes sure the food at your local cafe is safe to eat? Or why you should eat two serves of fruit and five serves of veg each day? Or why you should do 30 minutes of exercise every day? Or why you should have a flu vaccine every year to protect yourself in winter?
The answer is: public health. Public health works behind the scenes to keep you safe and well.
It is now your chance to be involved and step towards healthy with five easy ways to wellbeing this Public Health Week.
Each day of Public Health Week 2019 focuses on one of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing:
Monday 8 April - Connect
Tuesday 9 April - Be Active
Wednesday 10 April - Keep Learning
Thursday 11 April - Take Notice
Friday 12 April - Give
Why not try each one during Public Health Week and challenge your friends to do the same? It's as easy as meeting someone new or catching up for coffee with someone; going for a walk in your local park or playing games in the backyard with the kids; researching something you've always wondered about or signing up for a class; stopping to take a moment or listening to the sound of the birds; and giving your time to help a neighbour or volunteering at your local council or club. Give it a go!
If every person in our community took steps toward healthy, a ripple effect would be created and together we could improve the overall health of South Australia. If you want to find out more, you can visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/protectingpublichealth
