Did you know that half of the rubbish generated by Maroondah households comes from organic waste that could otherwise be composted?
Composting can remove up to 50 per cent from your household waste stream, reducing the burden on landfills while replenishing your lawn and garden.
Residents now have even more reason to discover the benefits of composting by joining Council in the ‘Compost Revolution’, an award-winning social enterprise that encourages people to compost at home.
By joining the Compost Revolution, residents receive a 60 per cent discount off the recommended retail price of a compost bin, worm farm or Bokashi bin (one per household, every 12 months).
Composting not only gives you more space in your waste bins, it creates a rich fertiliser for your garden.
During the composting process, plant materials are broken down by millions of microscopic organisms, known as ‘decomposers’. These tiny creatures turn the plant materials into their nutrient form which can then be returned to the soil.
In one single handful of compost there are more living things than there are people on this earth!
Best of all, you don’t need a big backyard in order to compost.
Many city dwellers have integrated composting seamlessly into their lives, having found it to be a convenient, cheap and odour-free way to reduce their daily outgoing waste.
Other benefits of composting:
Potentially allows you to downsize your garbage bin, which could lower your annual waste charge. Diverts organic waste away from local landfills, in turn reducing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted (Landfills are responsible for 3% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions).
