Feral rabit control for Peppermint Grove Beach
Shire of Capel 15 Apr 2019

Attention Pet Rabbit Owners

The Shire of Capel and local community will be doing a feral rabbit control program at Peppermint Grove Beach in May.

We will notify the public of the program’s start date on Facebook and our website once confirmed.

Rabbits are not native to Australia and negatively impact infrastructure and native ecosystems.

The new K5 Calici virus will be used on both private and public land to control feral rabbit populations.

This control method only affects rabbits and is safe for all other animals including domestic dogs, cats, all native animals and birds.

The Shire of Capel encourages all pet rabbit owners to contact their vet and get their rabbits vaccinated against the K5 virus.

During the 4 days of the baiting program, we recommend pet rabbits are kept away/indoors to reduce the possibility of coming into contact with mosquitoes and fleas that may carry the virus.

Any members of the Peppermint Grove Beach community who would like to participate in the rabbit control, please contact the Shire of Capel on 08 9727 0222.

Please contact your local vet for more information about the virus.
