Have your say on the waterways of the west

Residents can now have their say on how we can best protect the health, amenity, access and community values of waterways in the west of Melbourne.

The Victorian Government’s Waterways of the West Ministerial Advisory Committee was established to investigate issues affecting rivers and creeks in the west of Melbourne, including the Maribyrnong River and its tributaries.

The committee will work collaboratively with the community, Traditional Owners and agencies to develop recommendations, which may include changes to land use planning controls and responsibilities for land and water management.

Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce and Chief Executive Officer, Margot Stork are part of a reference group which was established to provide input to the process.

Cr Pearce said the first stage of consultation seeks to gain an understanding of the community’s vision and values for these waterways.

“Having healthy waterways is essential to ensuring the liveability of our townships and the sustainability of the broader environment,” Cr Pearce said.

“The creeks and rivers that run through our shire such as Jacksons Creek, Deep Creek, Riddells Creek and their tributaries are the headwaters of the Maribyrnong River and, therefore, they play a critical role in contributing to the health of Melbourne’s waterways as well as Port Philip Bay.

“We encourage all residents to take part in this important first step in protecting and preserving the health of these vital rivers and creeks.”

Residents can also indicate their favourite spots along the waterways of the Maribyrnong and Werribee rivers and parklands by adding a marker to an interactive online map on the site.

After the close of the consultation, a discussion paper will be prepared and is expected to be released in August 2019.
