The Immunisation Service will commence the annual influenza (flu) program on Wednesday 1 May.
The flu isn’t like the common cold. It is highly contagious, hits quickly and can last for weeks, meaning time off work or school and staying away from family and friends.
For children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with a weakened immune system, the flu can have serious and devastating outcomes.
The best defence against the flu is receiving a flu vaccination. Everyone should get an annual flu vaccination to ensure they are protected during the peak flu season, which often runs from June to September.
Eligibility for free flu vaccination in 2019The Victorian Government will again fund free flu vaccines for:
all children aged between six months to less than five years all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged above six months pregnant women (during any stage of pregnancy) all people aged above six months who have certain medical conditions which increase the risk of influenza disease complications; for example, severe asthma, lung or heart disease, low immunity or diabetes all adults aged above 65 years.Anyone else wishing to receive the flu vaccine can attend one of our many immunisation sessions for a cost of $25, with no appointment necessary.
