New birch trees to be planted Tuesday 16 April

Residents who frequent the Nicholson Street area of the Bairnsdale CBD, where the streetscaping works are occurring between Service Street and the Nicholson Street Mall, may have noticed the birch trees were removed this week from the roundabout near the Bairnsdale Library.

But fear not, they are being replaced with new trees of the same species as part of East Gippsland Shire Council’s project to upgrade the area and improve the amenity and accessibility.

Contractors are currently preparing the garden bed for understory planting and will plant four new birches in the coming weeks.

The removal of the trees and works in the roundabout area form part of the designs that were included in the public consultation process for the project.

It was always envisaged the trees would need to be removed as it was anticipated they would be compromised when the water main was replaced late last year as part of the project. Two of the trees were in decline prior to works starting.
