Beyond the Battle at Cohuna

Residents will have their chance to watch a documentary featuring stories and images of Gannawarra’s Servicemen and Servicewomen leading into ANZAC Day.

The Beyond the Battle documentary – which premiered during Remembrance Day commemorations in November 2018 – will be screened during two free sessions at Cohuna on Tuesday, 23 April.

“The Beyond the Battle project, developed to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One, does not glorify war or praise victors, but preserves the memory and stories of people to whom the Great War and Gannawarra have played an important role,” Mayor Lorraine Learmonth said.

“Supported by the Victorian Government, the Victorian Veteran’s Council and Gannawarra Shire Council, stories of the residents of the Gannawarra who served – many of whom never had the opportunity to return home – were collated over two years and developed into this film.”

The documentary will be shown at 2pm and 7pm at the Cohuna Community Meeting Room, located at 23-25 King Edward Street.

Bookings can be made by contacting the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre on (03) 5456 2047.

Meanwhile, residents can play a role in helping the Australian War Memorial document the locations of war memorials throughout the Gannawarra by taking part in the Places of Pride – National Register of War Memorials project.

“Places of Pride is an Australian War Memorial initiative to record the location and gather images of every publicly accessible memorial in Australia,” Mayor Learmonth said.

“RSL sub-branches, community organisations, schools, and individuals are encouraged to record and upload their local memorials to the website.

“All information collected will enable those who visit the Places of Pride website to search memorials via postcode and town, effectively connecting residents with community memorials and commemorating those who have served our country.”
