Funding secured for Tonkin Highway extension 16 April 2019

The State funding comes following the commitment by the Federal Government of $404 million in federal funding, which has also been matched by the federal Labor party, to deliver the $505 million highway extension.

Shire President Michelle Rich said the funding from both levels of government, and bipartisan support at a federal level, was a fantastic outcome for the community.

“This marks a significant milestone in our efforts to secure funding for the Tonkin Highway extension,” Cr Rich said.

“The Shire is pleased that the major political parties, as well as both levels of government, recognise the importance of delivering the Tonkin Highway extension to improve road safety and provide strategic linkages within the Shire and the wider Peel region,” Cr Rich said.

The 13.7km extension will provide a direct connection for residents and businesses to Perth’s major transport hubs, including Perth International and Domestic airports, Fremantle Harbour and the future Westport facility.

Cr Rich said the Shire would continue to seek support for the extension to include grade separations at Thomas, Orton, Bishop and Mundijong roads as well as at South Western Highway.

“With our population expected to grow to more than 100,000 people by 2050, it is critical that the delivery of the Tonkin Highway extension includes grade separations at these intersections so it can support the future growth of our community,” Cr Rich said.

“We will continue to work with Federal and State governments to ensure funding for the Tonkin Highway extension includes grade separations, which will reduce congestion and deliver the best planning outcomes.”

Work is scheduled to commence in 2020.
