Upgrade to Public Tennis Court a Winner

City of Darwin has today commenced works on the public tennis court and surrounding area in Chrisp Street, Rapid Creek.

These significant works include resurfacing of the three tennis courts and fence, a new multisport court, picnic area with shade structure, landscaping and a water facility.

The $453k project has received $230k funding from the NT Government and $12k from Tennis Australia. 

Lord Mayor Vatskalis inspected the area with Local Member for Nightcliff Natasha Fyles, Sam Gibson, CEO Tennis NT and Aldermen Peter Pangquee. 

“City of Darwin has three general public tennis courts across the city, all of which are free for the public to use,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis. “Maintaining these is a costly exercise and we are grateful for the funding this project has received.”

The upgrades will provide quality tennis facilities and the addition of a multi-sport court and picnic area means the entire community can now use the area.

Natasha Fyles, MLA Member for Nightcliff said “Playing sport and keeping active is a big part of our lives in Nightcliff and access to quality sporting facilities is vital.”

“The upgraded Tennis Courts in Chrisp Street will improve our local sporting amenities and ensure we have a healthier, happier community.”

“Tennis is a great way for people of all ages to keep active throughout the year” said Sam Gibson, CEO Tennis NT “and these courts will provide opportunities for so many people in the community to enjoy our sport.”

A multisport court has been included in the project, in response to requests to install an open access basketball court in the Nightcliff area.

The project is expected to be completed by July 1st and is being delivered by a local, experienced contractor.
